Sales of electric vehicle grew across all segments in India 2023 based on factors such as lower lifetime ownership costs, the availability of more models and purchase subsidies, according to a BloombergNEF report.
Efforts to improve the network of fast EV chargers have also added to the uptake in EV sales in the country. While the state-owned fuel retailers at the forefront, a spare of policies introduced by the federal government are also helping to sustain sales and attract investment in the sector, it looks like.
In the passenger vehicle segments that include cars and multi-utility vehicles, sales of electric ones nearly doubled to 96,000 in 2023, accounting for 2.3 percent of all passenger vehicle sales, as per the BloombergNEF report. Private demand for EVs in this segment remained strong, fuelled by the popularity of compact electric SUVs as well as the launch of low-cost models in the small segment such as Tata Motors’ Tiago EV and MG Motor’s Comet EV.
A strong uptake in the passenger vehicle was also seen in the high-end luxury passenger vehicle segments as well. Electric cab aggregators also contributed to the electric passenger vehicle demand in 2023.
In two-wheelers, annual grew by 13 percent in 2023 to nearly 18 million as per BloombergNEF estimates. EVs accounted for a little below 6 percent of the overall share, which was over one million units. Supporting the demand for electric two-wheelers are factors like high petrol prices, new exciting model introductions that promise better range and efficiency and the low operating costs. Though decreasing in some case with new generation model launches, the initial acquisition prices and in some cases continues to be a barrier. Also, spares and service support in some cases. The silver lining in electric two-wheeler part of the industry is the way it is organising itself.
In the case of buses, Delhi and Maharashtra continue to lead. Maharashtra is also leading in electric vehicle deployment across segments. While policy support continues to grow for electric vehicles, there is a need for rapid growth in charging infrastructure as well as the availability of ‘green’ electricity.
India had nearly 17,000 public EV charging stations by March 2024. It is expected that each station has at least two chargers. In addition to a rapid increase in charging infrastructure, an amount of standardisation is the need of the hour since it is highly likely that most of public chargers installed prior to 2022 were based on the Bharat charging standards. None of the passenger electric vehicles available currently are compatible with these chargers.

Epsilon CAM And C4V Sign Agreement For Cathode Material Qualification In North America
- By MT Bureau
- October 14, 2026
Epsilon CAM, one of the leading battery cathode active material manufacturers, and cell technology firm C4V have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to evaluate and qualify lithium iron phosphate and bio-mineralised lithium mixed metal phosphate cathode active materials.
The agreement establishes a framework to evaluate Epsilon CAM's cathode materials for cell-level integration across C4V's battery platforms and North American manufacturing programs, including those operated by sister company Near Prime Technologies.
As per the arrangement, Epsilon CAM will provide material samples and engineering data for testing, including electrochemical performance validation, cycle-life evaluation and process compatibility assessments. Subject to technical qualification and definitive contracts, the firms plan to explore multi-year material supply arrangements and technology integrations.
The evaluation will assess supply-chain sourcing for critical raw material inputs, including lithium, manganese and phosphorus, to align with North American content requirements.
Epsilon CAM is advancing plans for a 20,000-tonne-per-annum cathode active materials plant in India by 2028, positioning its production as a non-foreign-entity-of-concern source for global cell manufacturers.
Vikram Handa, MD, Epsilon CAM, said, "This LoI brings together complementary capabilities across cathode materials, cell technology and manufacturing. Our focus is to demonstrate material performance at the cell level and to work with C4V toward scalable, high-quality LFP and LMFP solutions that address the evolving needs of battery manufacturers and automotive customers."
Dr. Shailesh Upreti, CEO, C4V, said, "Epsilon is helping address one of the most important gaps in the U.S. battery supply chain: reliable access to scalable, ex-China phosphate cathode active materials. C4V is currently evaluating Epsilon’s materials through our Digital DNA qualification process for potential use across C4V cell platforms and U.S. manufacturing programs at Near Prime. Successful qualifications would create an important pathway connecting advanced cathode materials with C4V battery technology and domestic cell manufacturing."
